Education Tax Insights
VAT on Education and Training
Education and training provided by eligible bodies (such as schools, universities and certain training providers) is VAT exempt. However, most private tutors and independent training companies do not qualify as 'eligible bodies' and their services are therefore standard-rated at 20% once over the VAT threshold. We clarify the correct VAT position for every Essex education business.
Home Office Costs for Online Tutors
If you teach online or prepare lessons at home, you can claim a proportion of household running costs — heating, electricity, broadband and mortgage interest or rent. HMRC's flat rate allowance (£10 per month for occasional use) is simple; actual cost apportionment is usually more beneficial. We calculate the most advantageous method for every Essex home-based tutor.

01268 799919We understand the unique tax and accounting challenges of the education industry. Essex-based, serving sole traders to limited companies.
Yes — if you earn more than £1,000 from self-employment (including tutoring) in a tax year, you must register as self-employed with HMRC and submit an annual self-assessment return. The deadline for online filing is 31 January following the end of the tax year. We register Essex tutors with HMRC and file accurate self-assessment returns every year.
Only once your taxable turnover exceeds £90,000 in a 12-month period. The vast majority of private tutors in Essex will not exceed this threshold. If you do, private tuition in most subjects is standard-rated at 20% unless you qualify as an eligible body. We advise Essex tutors on when and whether VAT registration applies.
Allowable expenses include: stationery and educational materials, textbooks and resources, laptop and printer (apportioned if used privately), broadband (business proportion), home office costs, professional subscriptions, tutoring platform fees, DBS check costs, travel to pupil's homes and accountancy fees. We maximise expense claims for every Essex tutor.
Income from online tutoring — whether via platforms like MyTutor or Tutor.com or directly via bank transfer — is all taxable income. Online platform payments are increasingly reported to HMRC. We help Essex online tutors declare all income correctly and manage their tax obligations efficiently.
A limited company can be tax-efficient once profits are consistently above approximately £30,000–£40,000. It also provides limited liability protection. However, it adds administrative complexity. We advise Essex tutoring centre owners on whether incorporation makes financial sense at their current stage of growth.
